Herb Alert

Herb Alert is a free reference for looking up what published research actually says about herbal remedies, supplements and other natural products.

What you can look up

Search by a remedy, a condition or a symptom, using common names, botanical names or plain description. Each result summarises what a study reported and links to the source it came from.

  • Findings written in plain language, with the citation they came from
  • An evidence-strength rating, so a single small study is not presented like a large trial
  • Results that found no benefit, shown alongside results that did
  • Known adverse effects, and interactions with prescription medicines

What an account adds

An account is optional. Signing in lets you follow the conditions you care about and keep private notes about what you have tried.

  • Follow a condition and be told when new research on it is added
  • Track the substances you take, and see interaction warnings that apply to them
  • Record your own experiences privately -- personal notes are encrypted before they are stored
  • Export everything you have written, or delete your account, at any time

What Herb Alert is not

This is an information service, not a medical one. It does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and it is not a substitute for talking to a qualified clinician.

  • Nothing here is medical advice, and no result is a recommendation to take anything
  • Herbal products can interact with prescription medicines and can be unsafe in pregnancy or before surgery
  • The absence of a safety warning does not mean a substance is safe -- it may mean nobody has studied it
  • If you have urgent symptoms, contact a clinician or your local emergency service rather than searching here

Herb Alert reports what research found. It does not tell you what to take.
